1) Joel meaning "to whom Jehovah is God" was the second of the
twelve minor prophets, the son of Pethuel, probably prophesied
in Judah in the reign of Uzziah, about B.C. 800. The book of
Joel contains a grand outline of the whole terrible scene,
which was to be depicted more and more in detail by subsequent
prophets. The proximate event to which the prophecy related
was a public calamity, then impending on Judah, of a two fold
character -- want of water, and a plague of locusts -- and
continuing for several years. The prophet exhorts the people
to turn to God with penitence, fasting and prayer; and then,
he says, the plague shall cease, and the rain descend in its
season, and the land yield her accustomed fruit. Nay, the time
will be a most joyful one; for God, by the outpouring of his
Spirit, will extend the blessings of true religion to heathen
lands. The prophecy is referred to in Acts 2.

AV - Jonas (the prophet) (9)
- Jona (father of Peter) (4) [13]
1) Jonah meaning "dove" was the fifth minor prophet, the son of
Amittai, and a native of Gath-hepher. 2 Ki. 14:25. He
flourished in or before the reign of Jeroboam II, about B.C.
820. Having already , as it seems, prophesied to Israel, he was
sent to Nineveh. The time was one of political revival in
Israel; but ere long the Assyrians were to be employed by God
as a scourge upon them. The prophet shrank from a commission
which he felt would result, in the sparing of the hostile city.
He attempted therefore to escape to Tarshish. The providence
of God, however, watched over him, first in a storm, and then
in his being swallowed by a large fish (a sea monster,
probably a white shark) for the space of three days and three
nights. After his deliverance, Jonah executed his commission;
and the king, "believing him to be a minister from the supreme
deity of the nation," and having heard of his miraculous
deliverance, ordered a general fast, and averted the
threatened judgement. But the prophet, not from personal but
from national feelings, grudged the mercy shown to a heathen
nation. He was therefore taught by the significant lesson of
the gourd, whose growth and decay brought the truth at once
home to him, that he was sent to testify by the deed, as the
other prophets would afterward testify by word, the capacity
of Gentiles for salvation, and the design of God to make them
partakers of it. This was "the sign of the prophet Jonas."
Luke 11:29. But the resurrection of Christ itself was also
shadowed forth in the history of the prophet. The mission of
Jonah was highly symbolical. The facts contained a concealed
prophecy. The old tradition made the burial place of Jonah to
be Gath-hepher; the modern tradition places it at Nebi-Yunus,
opposite Mosul.
2) Jonas, was the father of Peter.
02496

AV - Joram (2)
1) Jehoram meaning "whom Jehovah has exalted" was the son of
Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, succeeded his father on the throne
of Judah at the age of 32 in B.C. 893. As soon as he was
established on the throne, he put his six brothers to death,
with many of the chief nobles of the land. He then, probably
at the instance of his wife Athaliah the daughter of Ahab,
proceeded to establish the worship of Baal. The prophetic
writing from the aged prophet Elijah, 2 Chr. 21:12, failed to
produce any good effect on him. The remainder of his reign was
a series of calamities. First the Edomites, who had been
tributary to Jehoshaphat, revolted from his dominion and
established their permanent independence. Next Libnah rebelled
against him. Then followed invasion by armed bands of
Philistines and of Arabians, who stormed the king's palace,
put his wives and all his children except his youngest son
Ahaziah, to death, 2 Chr. 22:1, or carried them into
captivity, and plundered all his treasures. He died of a
terrible disease. 2 Chr. 21:19,20.

AV - Josaphat (2)
1) Jehoshaphat meaning "whom Jehovah judges" was the king of
Judah, son of Asa, succeeded to the throne B.C. 914, when he
was 35 years old, and reigned 25 years. His history is to be
found among the events recorded in 2 Chr. 17 - 21:3. He was
contemporary with Ahab, Ahaziah and Jehoram. He was one of the
best, most pious and prosperous kings of Judah, the greatest
since Solomon. At first he strengthened himself against
Israel; but soon afterward the two Hebrew kings formed an
alliance. In his own kingdom Jehoshaphat ever showed himself a
zealous follower of the commandments of God: he tried to put
down the high places and groves in which the people of Judah
burnt incense, and sent the wisest Levites through the cities
and towns to instruct the people in true morality and
religion. Riches and honours increased around him. He received
tribute from the Philistines and Arabians, and kept up a large
standing army in Jerusalem. It was probably about the 16th
year of his reign, B.C. 989, when he became Ahab's ally in the
great battle of Ramoth-gilead, for which he was severely
reproved by Jehu. 2 Chr. 19:2. He built at Ezion-geber, with
the help of Ahaziah, a navy designed to go to Tarshish; but it
was wrecked at Ezion-geber. Before the close of his reign he
was engaged in two additional wars. He was miraculously
delivered from a threatened attack of the people of Ammon,
Moab and Sier. After this, perhaps, must be dated the war
which Jehoshaphat, in conjunction with Jehoram king of Israel
and the king of Edom, carried on against the rebellious king
of Moab. 2 Ki. 3. In his declining years the administration of
affairs was placed, probably B.C. 891, in the hands of his son
Jehoram.
